Andrew Dyer runs Upper Esk Music, which publishes his own music as well as music composed or arranged by others.

Andrew was born to musical parents. He began playing the piano when he was six years old, later learning the organ, double bass, timpani and percussion. He began composing music whilst at university, with music for two college plays. He is a passionate believer that ‘music is for all’, and that music is a great force for good in the building of social communities. Music has always played a major part in his long experience working with adults and young people of all ages. He has also worked as a church organist, conductor, percussionist and jazz player. Andrew’s 37 years’ teaching experience with responsibility for music in schools enabled him to gain expertise in writing and arranging music for young people across the full primary and secondary age range, from classroom music to choir, orchestra, jazz band and wind band. In his local community he has formed and conducted a local choir and is the bandleader of a successful local 12-piece jazz band for which he has written a number of pieces.

Over the past twenty years he has also played the piano for the movement form of Eurythmy, working in Botton Village Camphill Community and with the Eurythmy Association of Great Britain and Ireland, for which he has recently completed a nationwide tour with music which included his own compositions.

His numerous compositions and arrangements cover a variety of genres and styles. They include incidental music for fairy tales and plays, as well as compositions and arrangements for recorder ensemble, piano, jazz band and other combinations of instruments.

Eurythmy

Over the past twenty years a very enjoyable part of my work has been associated with the movement form of Eurythmy.

This is a movement art that expresses music and speech in visual form. It was developed by the Austrian philosopher Rudolf Steiner (1861-1925) in collaboration with Marie von Sivers in the early part of the 20th Century. In addition to being a performance art, Eurythmy is used educationally and therapeutically.

Much of my association with Eurythmy has centred on my work in Botton Village Camphill Community, where I have been a regular pianist for the Camphill Eurythmy School’s four-year course in the art. I have also played for the Botton Stage Group, a performing group of professional eurythmists.

I have composed piano pieces for groups of eurythmists, predominantly for fairy tales, many of which have been part of performance tours at national level.

I have recently completed the nationwide Cosmic Verses tour with the Eurythmy Association of Great Britain, which included two of my specially commissioned compositions.

Fairy Tales

Fairy Tales have universal appeal. They also contain universal truths about different forces that are at work in human beings.

My music for Fairy Tales has been composed for performances in Eurythmy, and was commissioned by groups of professional eurythmists.

The music re-creates and accompanies the moods and actions of the stories. The music does, however, stand in its own right, and can be enjoyed on its own.

Andrew is deeply interested in Eurythmy and as part of this interest he has composed a number of works including a forthcoming publication on Fairy Tales.

For more inormation concerning this project Andrew has written the following to inform and to whet the appetite.
